“I’m Not Photogenic” — Wait Until You See Your Images

When you book a portrait session, it should feel intentional from the very beginning. We plan everything together — wardrobe, hair, and makeup — so you feel confident and prepared. Many clients choose multiple looks during their shoot, and sometimes the hair and makeup artist stays to refresh and adjust throughout the session. Every detail is considered. We talk through locations, mood boards, colors, styling accents, dress rentals or fabric wrapping and — most importantly — how you want your images to feel: modern, historic, timeless, editorial, or natural.

If you’re doing multiple looks, your session may run a little longer to give each one the space it deserves. In my Isle of Palms studio, the light is clean and controlled, creating polished, fine-art portraits with luminous skin tones and soft, sculpted shadows. If you’re drawn to texture and character, downtown Charleston offers cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and those dreamy pastel walls that add depth and charm — while still keeping the focus exactly where it belongs: on you.

Here’s the truth: being “photogenic” isn’t a trait you’re born with. It’s created — through intentional lighting, thoughtful direction, flattering angles, and feeling genuinely at ease.

Most people don’t love photos of themselves because they’ve only experienced quick snapshots — harsh overhead lights, awkward poses, rushed moments. That isn’t a portrait experience. That’s just a photo.

The biggest shift happens about twenty minutes into the session.

Your shoulders relax.

Your posture changes.

You stop thinking about the camera.

That’s when authentic expression shows up.

“I’m not photogenic.”

It’s something I hear more often than I’d like to admit. But a portrait of you shouldn’t feel intimidating — it should feel like something you’re excited about. Something you look forward to.

As a professional Charleston portrait photographer — whether we’re creating refined studio portraits on Isle of Palms or wandering the historic streets of Charleston — I can tell you this: almost everyone feels unsure before their session.

Here’s what I hear all the time:

“I need to lose weight.”
“I wear glasses.”
“Can you Photoshop my double chin?”
“I’ve never had a good photo taken of myself.”
“Can you pose someone who’s curvy?”
“Can you make my arms look smaller?”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I feel awkward in front of the camera.”
“I’ve never liked photos of myself.”

These are the very reasons people consider postponing their session. But if you wait for the “perfect” time, you miss the moment you’re in right now. This season of your life matters. You deserve photographs at the age you are today — not ten years from now wishing you had them.

The idea of being “photogenic” is a myth. What most people really mean is, “I’ve never had a photographer guide me well.” Professional photography isn’t about standing in front of a camera and hoping for the best. It’s about intentional lighting, flattering angles, expert posing, and creating an environment where you feel comfortable and confident.

You will never be left to figure it out on your own. During your session, we’re in constant communication. I guide you every step of the way — how to stand, where to place your hands, how to move naturally. You don’t pose yourself. You are directed and gently refined so you look like you — just elevated.

You are beautiful as you are. And it’s my job to show you that.

As a professional photographer in Charleston, SC, my job is to guide you through flattering angles, natural movement, and subtle adjustments that make a significant difference. You never have to guess what to do with your hands or wonder if you look awkward. Every detail — from light placement to posing — is designed to highlight your best features while still feeling like you.

Whether you’re booking professional headshots in Charleston, boudoir, personal branding photography, wedding, equestrian or pet portraits, or a fine-art portrait session, the goal is the same: to create images that feel honest, elevated, and timeless.

I pay attention to light — soft, flattering light that shapes your face beautifully. I adjust posture, shoulders, chin, expression — gently and intentionally.

Then comes the moment that changes everything.

When clients sit down for their image reveal — sometimes after coffee in downtown Charleston, sometimes right back in the studio — there’s always a pause. A quiet moment. And then:

“Oh. That’s me?”

Yes. That’s you.

But it’s you relaxed. Confident. Seen in beautiful light. It’s the version of you that your family sees. The version your friends see when you’re laughing. The version that doesn’t show up in a rushed iPhone selfie.

By the time you see your portraits, the words “I’m not photogenic” almost always disappear.

Because the truth is, you were photogenic all along.

You simply needed the right light, the right guidance, and a portrait photographer who knows how to truly see you.
