I’ve pretty much spent my whole life around horses. I’ve loved their personalities, their quirks, their stories—and yes, I’ve always been happy to be the person carrying the treats.

Because, I’ve been around the sport for so long, I know there’s a lot more happening than what you see in the show ring. I notice the little things: that split second before a horse leaves the ground, the focus between rounds, the nerves, the relief, the quiet moments back at the barn, and the way a horse completely relaxes when it’s all over.

Those are the moments I want to photograph.  

I want my images to feel like you were actually there. The big moments matter, of course—, the ribbons, the celebrations—but some of my favorite photographs are the ones in between. A glance. A breath. A hand on a neck. A horse looking at his person like they’re the only two in the world.

That’s what I love about photographing horses and their people. It’s not just about getting a beautiful picture. It’s about knowing the story behind it and capturing something that feels true to the partnership.

Today, Heather Johnson Photography focuses on editorial-quality imagery for riders, trainers, owners, and brands who want to remember their time in the sport in a way that feels personal and timeless. Whether I’m ringside photographing a big class or quietly following along behind the scenes, I’m always looking for the moments that tell the story.

When I’m not behind my camera, I’m home in charleston with my dog Tyra and my Horse Gatsby.  I feel incredibly lucky that I get to make a living doing something I’ve loved for as long as I can remember.

Because when the class is over and the ribbons are put away, what matters most is remembering how it felt to be there.
