I’m Heather of Heather Johnson Photography, based in Charleston, South Carolina. While Charleston is home, my photography often takes me west to photograph America’s wild mustangs.

My goal is simple: I want to make these horses famous. The more people see them, learn their stories, and recognize individual horses and family bands, the more awareness we can bring to their future—and to the horses that may eventually need adoptive homes.

Unfortunately, BLM gathers continue to affect wild horse herds across the West. Through my photography, I hope to document these horses while they are still living wild and help people form a connection with them.  I hope the horses always remain wild.  

These photographs feature the wild horses of Salt Wells Creek in Wyoming. The herd is generally described in northern and southern areas, with Titsworth Gap serving as a geographic divider. The northern horses can be found around Laney Rim, while southern bands use areas around Bean Springs. There are also bands that tend to keep to themselves, including horses that range around Mellor Mountain.

Every horse has a story, and every band has its own relationships, personalities, and history. My hope is that these photographs help more people know them—not simply as numbers, but as individual wild horses worth knowing and remembering.
